Apple sets 9 September event as iPhone 18 and foldable rumours intensify

Apple has announced an autumn product event for 9 September, with the livestream taking place on 10 September in China and other parts of Asia.

The event is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Reports also suggest Apple may finally reveal its first foldable iPhone, potentially positioned as an iPhone Ultra.

The Pro models

Rumoured upgrades include a 2nm A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera, Apple’s C2 modem, a smaller Dynamic Island and new colours.

Those details remain reports rather than confirmed specifications. Memory-chip shortages could also push prices higher, although Apple has not announced any pricing.

Apple’s first foldable

The rumoured foldable is expected to use a book-style design, with a roughly 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen when opened. Reports suggest a titanium frame and Touch ID in the power button rather than Face ID.

The device could start between $1,999 and $2,500, but that range is unconfirmed and should not be treated as an Apple price.

Our opinion

Apple’s event date is the only solid news here. Everything else is the familiar pre-launch fog machine, with tiny fragments of information floating around until Tim Cook walks on stage and makes half the rumours look silly.

A foldable iPhone would be a significant expansion of Apple’s hardware strategy, but the alleged price would put it in luxury-gadget territory. Apple will need more than a thin hinge and a new name to make that feel sensible.
